Join us at Polisteatern for a powerful performance of Enoch Arden, Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s narrative poem, set to music by Richard Strauss. This unique fusion of spoken word and piano explores love, loss, and the challenges of fate.

In this performance, pianist Lana Suran and actress Nancy Ofori bring together music and poetry in a vivid and moving interpretation.

Enoch Arden tells the story of a humble fisherman who, shipwrecked and stranded on a deserted island, spends years longing to return home. When he finally makes it back, he discovers that his beloved wife, believing him dead, has remarried. Out of love and selflessness, Enoch chooses to keep his return a secret, sacrificing his own happiness for her newfound peace.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809–1892) was one of the most celebrated poets of the Victorian era. As Poet Laureate of Great Britain and Ireland, his work captured the spirit of his time, exploring themes of love, heroism, and the passage of time with clarity and depth. Enoch Arden, published in 1864, remains one of his most enduring narrative poems.

Richard Strauss (1864–1949) was one of the leading composers of the late Romantic and early modern eras. Known for his vivid orchestration and expressive musical language, his works span from operas and tone poems to lieder and chamber music. Enoch Arden, composed in 1897, is a melodrama for narrator and piano, where Strauss brings Tennyson’s poetic narrative to life through a restrained yet deeply evocative score.

Lana Suran is a Swedish pianist renowned for her profound musical expression and commanding stage presence. She has captivated audiences across Europe, South America and the United States with notable performances at prestigious venues and the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, where she was an Artist in Residence.
